ATV Riding Gear
Off-roading on your all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is an exhilarating way to spend a summer day. But if you're new to powersports, it's important to understand the necessary precautions for a safe ride. Unlike cars and trucks, ATVs lack seatbelts or metal shells, making them more similar to motorcycles. So, just like motorcyclists, it's crucial to wear appropriate safety gear. After all, collisions with rocks and slippery patches can lead to serious injury.
Here are the key pieces of ATV gear you need for safe and responsible off-road riding.
Helmets
The most important piece of ATV gear is a helmet, which you must wear at all times. But not just any helmet will do. You need a comfortable, fitted helmet with a high crash-test rating that is specifically designed for extreme sports riding. As few helmets are made for ATV riding, you can opt for a motorcycle or motocross helmet instead.
- Ensure that you try on helmets in-store to find one that fits snugly but not too tightly. A comfortable helmet is more likely to be worn. Remember to replace your helmet after any impact, no matter how minor, or every five years, as the protective padding inside begins to degrade.
- Goggles: Some helmets, particularly motorcycle helmets, come with a full plastic face mask that protects your face from flying debris, bugs, sand, dirt, and rain. However, other helmets leave your face bare, so you must wear goggles to shield your eyes. A bit of dust can temporarily blind you, causing you to crash. Therefore, choose goggles that fit well with your helmet and offer UV protection or anti-fogging capabilities.
- Boots: Flip-flops or tennis shoes won't cut it when it comes to ATV riding. You need a protective, sturdy shoe with good grip that comes up to your ankles. Riding boots with good tread are ideal. Ensure that they fit well and break them in a little before wearing them for the first time. Tuck in the laces so they don't catch on any ATV parts.
Jackets & Riding Suits
A padded jacket or one-piece riding suit is a practical option for ATV riding. You may also want a neon-colored or reflective vest for visibility. Make sure your jacket or riding suit fits well, and wear them over your street clothes. Choose a breathable and flexible jacket or suit that allows full range of motion and prevents overheating. Some models come with ventilation.
If you opt for a jacket rather than a full riding suit, choose some riding pants or wear pants made from stiff, durable material to protect your skin from abrasions.
Gloves
Your hands need protection too! Invest in high-quality riding gloves made from durable material that provides a good grip on the throttle. In cold weather, insulated gloves can prevent chapping and even frostbite. In warm weather, choose thinner gloves with ventilation.
Off-roading on an ATV is a thrilling experience that can quickly turn dangerous if proper safety precautions aren't taken. Remember to always wear a high-quality helmet with a high crash-test rating, along with goggles to protect your eyes from debris. Sturdy boots with good grip and ankle protection, as well as protective jackets or riding suits, are also crucial pieces of gear to prevent injury. Lastly, don't forget to invest in durable riding gloves that offer a good grip and protect your hands from the elements. With the right gear and a responsible attitude, you can enjoy the excitement of ATV riding while staying safe and injury-free. Happy riding!
